The modern1Some historians of language see Jewish influence here. On the one hand, the escape from slavery in Egypt is still in the bones of this people. Thus, freedom was understood negatively as being unbound. Then Jews in the Diaspora were exposed to constant “integration efforts”, i.e. assimilation demands, by the respective host peoples and finally their relationship to YAHWE was not a love relationship, but a rather cool contractual relationship. Concept of freedom leads to nothing, in the literal sense. In the absolutely realized independence I would even be independent of my self, it dissolves into nothing. Originally, freedom meant belonging to the loved ones, not independence.
The etymology of freedom leads to word affinities with love, children of a family, friendship, wife. And the obsolete but not yet extinct German word „Freier” means the lover who „freit” (courts) the woman he loves.
Coming home
Imagine a wet cold unfriendly evening. Your car had a flat tire, you had no umbrella. Soaked you finally reach your house. And you are already expected. Your beautiful girlfriend opens the door. She beams at you, hugs you, hands you a towel. As you enter the house, the smell of delicious dinner wafts through the warm apartment. But your girlfriend first filled your bathtub with water. Relaxed, you sit in the bathtub, beautiful sad music is playing. Your love hands you a glass of a good red wine. … What you feel now: You feel so relaxed and free, so taken care of, so beloved. This is freedom. Freedom is belonging, not independence.
My freedom is fulfilled in the freedom of the Belonging
Feel free to also put yourself in the role of your girlfriend2Exceptionally, also like to see it gender-neutral: the woman had the flat tire, the friend cooked and expects the girlfriend… You are waiting for your friend. It makes you happy to cook for him, to think of him. After you’ve brought him the glass of red wine and seasoned the sauce for the lamb stew, you remember how much he likes to sit in the bathtub by candlelight. So you light another candle and bring it to him in the bathroom. Then you set the table. And you too feel free, happy, loving, loved.
You understand? In the thinking of liberals, your freedom ends with the freedom of the other. But in the truth of the non-perverse sense of freedom, it is the opposite: the other is the guarantor of your freedom: Freedom is belonging.
Seize this concept of freedom! Leave the wrong way of the ruling revaluation. Come back home. Knock. And it will be opened to you.
Accordingly, your freedom is not limited by obedience or submission, not even by slavery. Only selflessness threatens your freedom.
